Places to Begin Research

Narrowing Your Topic

  • Think of choosing a topic question as part of your research.
  • Cyclical instead of linear (i.e. go back and make changes).

  • Do background reading first (books, encyclopedias).

  • Choose ideas that focus on a more narrow piece of the big picture.

  • Choose ideas that have some relation to another topic scheme.

  • If you don’t find enough information, back up and try another idea (that's okay).

  • Document your progress and thoughts!

  • You are searching for new information. This requires changing directions frequently.
