OpenAthens is an authentication service that allows you to access electronic resources licensed by Atkins Library, both on- and off-campus. It is replacing EZProxy. OpenAthens is a more secure and reliable service and should resolve errors and issues you may have encountered with EZProxy.
You should not have to log in to library electronic resources via OpenAthens if you have already logged into your email or another website using your NinerNet credentials.
You will only have to log in via OpenAthens if you navigate directly to a content provider's website before logging in elsewhere with your NinerNet credentials. Look for a place to "sign in" or "login" on the content provider's website. The OpenAthens log in screen will look like this:
Under "Find your organisation" search for "University of North Carolina at Charlotte" and select the option that appears. You will then be prompted to sign in using your NinerNet credentials. After successfully authenticating, you will be taken back to the content provider's website.
If you change devices or use a different browser, you will have to login to OpenAthens again. OpenAthens uses browser cookies to remember your credentials, so if you clear your browser cookies and/or switch to using a different browser or a different device, you will need to login again.
If you have library electronic resources bookmarked, you will need to update these bookmarks.
If you have questions about using OpenAthens, please reach out via AskAtkins. If you are having trouble reaching a resource please click here and submit the issue via the form.
